With a traditional tandem bicycle, average riders can make an average speed of 35 km/h. Under the same conditions, the Läufer is targeting 40 km/h - not as a calculated average, but constantly maintained with the help of a hybrid drivetrain.
A clean (no grease) toothed belt connects the pedal rings with an intermediate gear. A second tooth belt connects the gear with the 14-speed Rohloff Speedhub rear wheel hub.
The intermediate gear is a differential planetary gear comprising three electric engines which can assist the rider uphill, or recuperate kinetic energy downhill.
